Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is a disease caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains in the body and can reactivate to cause shingles when the immune system is weakened.

Symptoms:

  • Burning pain, itching, or tingling 2–3 days before the rash appears
  • Rash or clear blisters appear on one side of the body along the nerve path
  • The rash turns into pus-filled blisters, then scabs over
  • May have low-grade fever, fatigue, and headache
  • Pain after the rash heals (common in the elderly) can last for several weeks

There are two types of Shingles Vaccines:

  • Live attenuated vaccine (Zostavax, Skyzoster)
  • Single dose
  • For people aged 50 and older
  • Not suitable for immunocompromised individuals or pregnant women
  • Recombinant protein vaccine (RZV) such as Shingrix
  • Two doses, 2–6 months apart
  • Suitable for everyone, including immunocompromised people
  • Provides up to 97% protection and reduces nerve pain by 91.2%

Symptoms that require immediate Medical Attention:

  • Rash appearing on the eye or face (risk of blindness)
  • Rash spreading all over the body
  • Severe pain or pain that does not respond to medication
  • Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., cancer, HIV)

Recommended for:

  • Adults aged 50 and older
  • People with weakened immune systems
