What are Measles, Rubella, and Mumps?

These are three highly contagious viral diseases that primarily affect children and young adults. They can lead to serious complications if not prevented through vaccination.

Measles

  • Caused by the measles virus
  • Symptoms: high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a widespread rash
  • Complications: pneumonia, brain inflammation (encephalitis), hearing loss, death
  • Highly contagious through respiratory droplets

Rubella

  • Caused by the rubella virus
  • Symptoms: mild fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes
  • Mild in children and adults, but very dangerous in pregnancy
  • Can cause congenital rubella syndrome (CRS): birth defects such as deafness, heart defects, and developmental delays if pregnant women are infected

Mumps

  • Caused by the mumps virus
  • Symptoms: swelling of the salivary glands (under ears), fever, headache, muscle aches
  • Can lead to complications such as meningitis, orchitis (testicle inflammation), infertility, and hearing loss

Why Get the Vaccine?

  • Protects against measles, mumps, and rubella
  • Prevents serious complications (e.g. brain inflammation, infertility)
  • Helps stop the spread in schools and communities
  • Prevents birth defects if rubella infects a pregnant woman
  • Long-lasting immunity with just 2 doses

Who should get the vaccine?

Children

  • Should receive 2 doses of MMR:
  • First dose at 9–12 months of age
  • Second dose at 2½ to 6 years of age
  • This provides long-term protection against all 3 diseases

Unvaccinated Adults

  • Especially those working in schools, healthcare settings, or around children
  • Anyone who has no documented history of vaccination or infection

Women Planning Pregnancy

  • Get vaccinated at least 1 month before pregnancy
  • Not safe during pregnancy (live vaccine)
  • Helps prevent birth defects from rubella

International Travelers

  • Anyone traveling to regions where measles or rubella outbreaks are common should be fully vaccinated
  • Travelers are at higher risk due to increased exposure
