What is Rabies?

The infectious disease caused by a virus that affects the nervous system and can be fatal if not treated promptly. This virus can be transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals, especially mammals such as dogs, cats, or bats.

Symptoms

  • Early stage: Flu-like symptoms such as headache, fatigue, fever, and general discomfort.
  • Later stage: More severe symptoms including burning pain around the bite wound, throat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, and nervous system abnormalities.
  • Final stage: Neurological symptoms, seizures, difficulty breathing, and potentially death within a few days after symptoms appear.

Additional Important Information:

  • At-risk: Those bitten or scratched, especially in rural areas.
  • Prevention: Vaccinate pets yearly and avoid stray animals.
  • Treatment: Clean wounds and see a doctor immediately for vaccination.

Recommend For:

  • Travelers visiting high-risk areas such as countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
  • Those who may come into contact with animals during their travels.
  • Those engaging in high-risk activities such as hiking in forests or working with animals

Here are the two types of rabies vaccines related to timing:

  • 1. Pre-exposure vaccine:
    • Given before potential exposure to rabies (e.g., for travelers, veterinarians, animal handlers).
    • Helps build immunity in case of future exposure.
  • Post-exposure vaccine:
    • Given after a suspected or confirmed rabies exposure (such as an animal bite).
    • Administered along with rabies immunoglobulin to prevent infection.
